What We Do

The LearningHUB offers online Literacy, Basic and Essential Skills upgrading through three flexible learning options. Learners can participate in Live Classes (scheduled for a specific date and time) or Independent Study Courses (available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week). Learners can also register for Blended Study, which is a combination of Live Classes and Independent Study Courses. Live classes are popular with learners who prefer to work in a group. Independent study is popular with learners who prefer to work on their own, at their own pace.

About Literacy & Basic Skills

Literacy and Basic Skills are the skills people need to function as contributing members of the community. These skills include everything from reading, writing and math to speaking, listening, self management and self direction. Improved literacy and basic skills lead to increased opportunities to find better jobs, maintain employment through skills upgrading and training, continue education, and make positive life choices.

About Essential Skills

Essential Skills is another way to talk about literacy. Essential Skills are the skills people need for work, learning and life. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. There are nine essential skills including: Reading Text, Document Use, Numeracy, Writing, Oral Communication, Working with Others, Continuous Learning, Computer Use and Thinking Skills (which includes problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, job task planning and organizing, significant use of memory and finding information). Click here for more information about Essential Skills.

Learners registered with the LearningHUB can access a variety of curriculum and learning activities based on the essential skills. In certain instances where a learner has a specific occupational goal, online learning activities are based on the essential skills identified as necessary for that job under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) Code.
